Dr. Khalil's change of heart

"I have to admit that I always think about Behcet's disease as - some of my patients have this disease and I have to treat them. I look to it exactly from a medical or a clinical point of view, but after hearing the talks here for two days, I have to admit that I was not thinking a universal or a complete point of view. Now I am really considering how it is affecting the lives of so many people, and it tragically changes their way of life.

This has to be very carefully considered by both doctors dealing with patients with Behcet's disease, and of course with other diseases. We have just heard a very peculiar talk by one person who is already a doctor, and who is also a patient. It is a very peculiar talk, because we could get it from both points of view. And I think by meeting, the presence of both doctors and patients together, I think all of us now, we share more or less a common point of view". (Dr. Ahmad Khalil, May 2000)

Dr. Khalil went on to talk about the difficulties of reaching and treating patients in Egypt.

In a private conversation later on, Dr. Khalil said: "I hope I still remember the feelings I have here later, I hope I don't forget these feelings. We should all be on the same side".
