"Recurrent aphthae commonly appears in Behcet's disease patients, and because of that the patients sometimes have serious oral problems. The status of oral mucosa becomes worse for insufficient tooth cleaning due to the pain by recurrent aphthae. Thus, some patients have typical dental disease such as dental caries and periodontal diseases as a secondary matter.
The acquisition of good practice for oral health contributes to suppressing the deterioration of aphthae, and to preventing common dental diseases such as dental caries and periodontal disease." (Prof. Hiroko Miura, May 2000)
Prof. Miura also mentioned in her speech that treatment at the dentist's can sometimes cause worsening of mouth ulcers.
